My First Art Journal Page: Strawberries

A few weeks ago I came across Vicky's blog: www.clips-n-cuts.com and I immediately fell in love with her art journal pages. And her videos of her art journals got me hooked!
I have always been intimidated with mixed media art.  To me, it seemed too complicated and you need to have a very artistic mind (which I openly admit that I don't have )to make such beautiful mix media projects. But watching all Vicky's videos really encouraged me to try "new waters".

So...here goes.  This is my first art journal page.  I listed all the supplies I used below. The strawberries are Magnolia DooHickey's: Strawberry Tag and the Wild Strawberry & Leaf. I die cut some red patterned paper then colored each strawberry using Fired Brick ink pad and blending tool. For the leaves, I dies cut 2 shades of green card stock and white card stock for the flowers.

First, I glued together a few pages to make the page thicker using Gel Medium. I didn't do a very good job doing that because it started to bubble and stretch a little bit.  At that point, I almost wanted to give up! LOL...But I didn't! Next I glued some TH Tissue paper for my background. Applied a layer of Gel Medium and let it dry. Then I applied a thin layer of gesso. When it dried, I played with Distress Paints. Using the TH Stencil, I added white bubble accents with white Embossing Paste. Then I randomly stamped the mesh stamp with Pink Petunia chalk ink.

When everything was dry, I adhered the strawberries, leaves and flowers using gel medium an also applied gel medium on top. I stamped "i strawberries" using a stamp set from Michaels and Archival Ink Jet Black. The heart is a die cut I found in my stash and I just colored it with a red Faber Castell marker and I added some Crackle accents. I then added some highlights on the letters using a white gel pen.

I dried the whole page using a heat tool then I used Faber-Castell Big Brush markers to add shading to the strawberries, leaves and white flowers. I also added some brown stains around the page using the FCBB markers.

Here you can see the texture from the gel medium that I applied. It makes the surface non-porous and makes it easy to smudge the ink from the FCBB markers

... and a little bit of the embossing paste and the Crackle Paint on the heart. It didn't crackle the way I wanted it to because it was too impatient and I used the heat tool.  I should have just waited! Haha

Overall, I really REALLY enjoyed making this art journal page. The smudging of paint with my fingers, the textures... and even the mistakes I made along the way...it was fun!
I have a few ideas for my next page and I can't wait to start.

Before I forget, I would like to make a shout out to Vicky for being such an inspiration to me!
